First Presbyterian Church embraces the historic Christian faith as it is revealed in the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments. Together with Christians throughout the ages, we affirm the following foundational truths:
About God
God is one Being, eternally existing in three persons: The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit. God is the Sovereign, the Creator, and the Sustainer of all things. He is the only God, and the source of all truth and life.
About the Bible
The Bible (The Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments) is the written Word of God, inerrant in its original writings, the infallible authority by which the Lord guides and directs all our activities.
About Jesus Christ
Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, miraculously conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the Virgin Mary. He is both fully God and fully man. Through Christ's life, death, resurrection, and ascension, He accomplished a decisive victory over sin for His people and established His Kingdom among men.
About Man
Man was created in the glorious image of God as a rational, moral, and spiritual being. Man sinned in Adam and fell with him in his first sin. Man's fall affected him spiritually, intellectually, and physically. He is restored only by the initiating and renewing grace of the Holy Spirit and the cleansing blood of the Lord Jesus Christ.
About the Return of Jesus
The Lord Jesus will return in glory and triumph for the final judgement and the consummation of His Kingdom.
About Salvation
Salvation is received by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone, not by good works (though good works are evidence of a transformed life).
About the Church
The Church is the people of God from all ages, saved by the blood of Jesus Christ, the head of the church, also called "the body of Christ." Christians join together in local communities or churches to worship their Lord, to grow together in His likeness, and to enjoy serving Him together.
These and other truths are affirmed in various statements of faith from the early church, such as the Apostle's Creed and the Nicene Creed. We also stand within the rich tradition of the Reformation of the sixteenth century, which is anchored in the gospel of grace. The Westminster Confession of Faith is a beautiful expression of the central teachings of the Bible, as has served as the doctrinal standard for Presbyterians since the seventeenth century.
